Woodwind Quintet was commissioned and premiered by Omega Ensemble at Sydney Opera House, on 7th December 2019, in Sydney, Australia.

with support of University of Alberta’s Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies.

The inspiration in this composition comes from the folk traditions of Central Europe, in this case, the traditional singing and dancing styles of the Dinaric Alps region (Dinarides). Using a water whistle, the composer first introduces a bird in a call-and-answer episode with stunning “Ganga” singing from Croatia. The bird then flies over mountains and valleys, observing neighboring communities, field songs and village dances from Bosnia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Albania, until the athletic klezmer style animates everyone in a fast dance punctuated with a cheering ‘Hey!’”

The Ganga is a type of rural singing of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its characterized by a unique singer accompanied by a chorus in what can be described as a lament. … The Ganga is traditionally sung by shepherds between valleys as a means of long-distance communication.

Fujin is the Japanese god of wind, he has been known to bring devastating typhoons to Japan over the centuries. Typhoons that cause damages as well as the loss of life. However, on some days, Fujin decides to be a nice god.  Fujin is depicted with his “windbag” most of the time. This bag contains the winds and according to Japanese mythology, Fujin opened the bag at the world’s creation and blew away all the clouds so that brightness was shown down on the world.

String orchestra version

String Octet inspired by Stefan Zweig’s novella “Brief einer Unbekannten”.  The work was jointly commissioned by the Saguenay and Lafayette Quartets, which gave its première in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on 13 January 2018. The version for string orchestra was first performed by the Belarusian State Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Evgeny Bushkov, on 13 March 2019

The quartet was composed during the short period right after the striking death of Eleonora Turovsky in spring 2012, who was like a second mother for me… first time in my life suddenly aspect of life “Time” passing became very strikingly visual. There are 2 principal subjects in this quartet, Time and Fate (as you can see at the name of Quartet). Time subject presented through all 4 movements as mechanical clock-like rhythms and themes, it’s like you always feel the life-clock is ticking… Second subject – the Fate theme…which is a principal theme of 3rd movement, but it appears as well in the final of 1st mv and at the culmination point of 4th to complete the link between all 4 movements… The quartet is commissioned by and dedicated to New Orford String Quartet which was premiered it on 26th July 2013.hich was premiered it on 26th July 2013.
